The Shelby County Youth Assistance Program will be working with others to provide quality mentoring services to the community. Mentoring can be a very powerful way to positively impact the life of a child with a relatively small time commitment.
What is involved?
The mentoring program uses adult volunteers to commit to one hour per week for at least one year to support, guide, and be a friend to a young person.
Is mentoring for you?
Desirable qualities of a mentor include:
- Willing listener
- Encouraging and supportive
- Patient and flexible
- Tolerant and respectful of individual differences
- Trustworthy and dependable
How do you get started?
If you would like to explore being a mentor, please fill out the Mentor Application, and staff will follow up to discuss your options. You will need to agree to a background check including driving record check, personal interview, provide personal references, and attend mentor training prior to being matched.
